While there may be some debate as to whether or not Old Head Golf Links is a great golf course (we certainly think it is), let alone a links golf course (perhaps it would be more accurately described as a cliff-top course), there is no debate that Old Head is among the handful of most spectacular courses in the world. Old Head is stunningly sited on a 200 acre peninsula, jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean, with waves crashing into the rocks at the base of the 200 to 300 foot tall cliffs. To put that in perspective, the cliffs at Pebble Beach are generally less than 100 feet tall.
One of the many beauties of the design at Old Head is that the architects have managed to run nine holes along the cliffs and leave a view of the ocean on all 18 holes. Yet, with six sets of tees on each hole, the course presents an appropriate challenge for all golfers from the beginner to the tour pro. For those golfers who do not suffer from vertigo, we highly recommend a trip back to the championship tee on the 18 th hole, where the golfer hits from a tee perched on the edge of an ocean front cliff in the shadow of the lighthouse.
As a compliment to the spectacular golf course, Old Head Golf Links offers the visiting golfer a five-star restaurant, a terrace for outside dining overlooking the golf course and lighthouse, and many other amenities not usually associated with Irish golf clubs. So bring your appetite, and your camera for the endless breathtaking photo opportunities, when you choose to include Old Head Golf Links in your next Irish golf tour.
