Portsalon Golf Club is surely one of the most beautiful golf courses that one could hope to play on any Irish golf vacation. At the same time, Portsalon is also a challenging and enjoyable test of golf, combining long stretches of classic links golf with a few holes that have less of a links feel but all of the challenge of the other holes.
At Portsalon, the golfer plays the first seven holes along the beach on the shores of Lough Swilly, with spectacular views and, starting at the 3rd hole, classic Irish linksland. For the next five holes, the golfer plays through more subtle dunes, and then on the last six holes the golfer plays over a stretch of land that is away from the beach but contains several strategic burns and many well-designed golf holes.
Located in rural County Donegal, Portsalon Golf Club is certainly off the beaten path of the usual Irish golf tours. However, with a wonderful Irish links golf course and a casual but welcoming clubhouse, Portsalon is a personal favorite and worthy of at least one round on any Irish golf tour that includes Northwest Ireland.
